Q99 differences and method
Explore shared titles, different phrases and the method behind the selected entries.
This comparison matches the accepted 99 Q99/Hafs titles against the titles in each source list. Each list retains its own order; the comparison does not alter Q99’s sequence.
| List | Shared titles | Different Q99 titles | Different source-list titles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tirmidhi | 69 | 30 | 30 |
| Ibn Hajar | 87 | 12 | 12 |
Counts compare titles. Vowels, the definite article and Raʾuf/Mutaʿal/Hayy spelling variants are normalized; a shared root does not merge distinct names. Phrase differences such as Nur ↔ Nur al-samawat wa-l-ard are included. These are not counts of newly discovered names.
What distinguishes Q99/Hafs?
Qur’anic wording and attribution
Q99 examines names and nominal descriptions attributed to Allah through their Qur’anic wording, context and grammatical notes. Creating a new nominal name from a verb is outside the acceptance method; contextual attribution and sensitive surface forms are explained in the entry.
Order by the first Hafs witness
Accepted entries follow their first witness in Hafs mushaf order, including the basmala at al-Fatiha 1:1. The opening is Allah → al-Rahman → al-Rahim → Rabb → Malik. Historical lists retain their own order in the comparison.
Title, actual wording and complete phrase
The index lemma, inflected surface form, complete witness and verse are separate fields. For Dhu al-Jalal wa-l-Ikram, the wajh relationship at 55:27 and the Rabb relationship at 55:78 are shown separately.
79 cores + 20 layers
Root, form and semantic relationships are recorded in the accepted project map. Forms such as Mālik, Malik and Malīk retain distinct titles. These counts describe the project’s classification.
From the Qur’anic witness to Hamd
Hamd is the sequence’s didactic lyrical interpretation: 99 lines running from 99 to 1. Qur’anic text, brief meaning, grammar, lyrical interpretation and performance wording have their own fields.
A source note on Ibn Hajar’s list
Ibn Hajar’s discussion of replacing 27 names and his explicit 99-name enumeration require separate attention. TDV notes that al-Khaliq already occurs in Tirmidhi’s list and that Dhu al-Jalal wa-l-Ikram occurs at al-Rahman 55:27 and 55:78. The source list is preserved here with that comparison note.
Q99 titles without the same complete title in either source list 11
Under the complete-title criterion, 11 entries match neither list. This includes ʿAlim / ʿAlim al-ghayb wa-l-shahada, Rafiʿ / Rafiʿ al-darajat, and Nur / Nur al-samawat wa-l-ard relationships. Each entry links to its verse and details.

Scope of the comparison
This page compares accepted entries and source-list titles; it is not a new acceptance/rejection audit of every possible candidate. Reasons are not invented where no recorded exclusion rationale exists. Witness–verse accuracy, grammatical attribution and selection criteria remain matters for the individual records. This comparison leaves Q99’s sequence and Hamd’s original text unchanged.
